S01E05 Safiya’s Story: She Almost Gave Up. Then the Space Appeared.
I've been thinking about this conversation since the day we recorded it.
Safiya wasn't on my radar as someone building a big business story. She was someone I'd noticed in the community — warm, active, clearly passionate — who had opened a clay studio in Ancaster not that long ago. I was curious. That was enough.
What I got was one of the most layered conversations I've had so far.
Safiya spent 15 years in higher education, teaching, research, training, development, across Dubai and Canada. She's smart. She's self-aware. She has a researcher's brain and a community builder's heart. And two years ago, she quit her job, moved cities, picked up pottery as a hobby, and accidentally ended up building something her community is already calling their second home.
We talked about what it actually looks like to start over in your late thirties when you don't have a safety net. About the six-month deadline she gave herself and the week she almost pulled the plug. About pricing an experience in an economy where people are scared to spend money. About the tension between wanting to give everything to your community and needing your business to survive.
And then she told me about a family who walked into her studio one afternoon, right after a funeral. They just needed to give their kids somewhere to put their hands. I won't tell you what happened next — you need to hear her say it.
When I asked Safiya what she wants to be remembered for in her community, she said she wants Kreative Klay to become a collective. A place people come to create, to connect, to feel less alone. She's six months in and she's already there.
